What GSM Actually Measures

GSM stands for grams per square meter — the weight of one square meter of fabric. It's the standard unit hotel procurement teams use to specify towel weight, and it's a reasonable proxy for plushness and absorbency, but it isn't the whole story. This guide covers what GSM tells you, what it doesn't, and what to specify for each area of a hospitality property.

To measure GSM, a fabric sample is cut to an exact one-meter square and weighed. A 600 GSM towel weighs roughly twice as much per square meter as a 300 GSM towel. Because weight scales with pile density and yarn thickness, higher GSM generally correlates with a thicker, more absorbent, more substantial-feeling towel — which is why it's become the shorthand buyers use when specifying quality.

These factors pull in different directions depending on where the towel is used, which is why hotels specify different GSM for different areas of the property rather than using one weight throughout.

These ranges are starting points, not fixed rules — a boutique hotel building a specific brand identity may deliberately specify above or below the typical range for its category. The important discipline is specifying GSM consistently across a linen programme so that reorders match the original guest experience.

GSM vs Cost & Laundering

GSM has a close to linear relationship with raw material cost — a 700 GSM towel uses roughly 40% more cotton than a 500 GSM towel of the same dimensions, and that difference shows directly in unit price. It also affects ongoing operating cost: heavier towels take longer to dry in commercial dryers, which increases energy use and reduces linen turnaround per shift, a real factor for high-occupancy properties running tight laundry schedules.

Working Note

For high-turnover areas like pools and spas, many hotels intentionally specify a lower GSM than the property's bath towels — the faster dry time keeps linen circulating, and guests don't typically hold that area to the same weight expectation as an in-room towel.

What GSM Doesn't Tell You

Two towels at the same GSM can perform differently because weight is only one variable in construction. Buyers should specify these alongside GSM, not instead of it:

  • Yarn twist: Low or zero-twist yarn is softer and more absorbent than tightly twisted yarn at the same GSM, because looser yarn holds more air and water.
  • Pile height and density: A short, dense pile and a tall, looser pile can weigh the same but feel and perform differently.
  • Fiber quality: A 500 GSM extra-long staple cotton towel will outperform a 500 GSM short-staple towel in softness, durability, and pilling resistance, even at identical weight.
  • Finishing: Softening treatments, sizing, and shrinkage control all affect handle and long-term performance independent of GSM.

This is why the most reliable way to evaluate a towel is a physical sample, not a spec sheet alone — GSM narrows the field, but hand-feel and wash testing confirm the actual product.

How to Specify GSM in Your Order

  • State GSM as a target with an acceptable tolerance (e.g. 600 GSM ±5%) — some variance is normal in production.
  • Specify fiber type and yarn twist alongside GSM, not just the weight figure.
  • Request a pre-production sample at the confirmed GSM before bulk production, and retain it as the reference standard for QC and future reorders.
  • For hotel chains, document the full specification — GSM, fiber, dimensions, color — in a standing spec sheet so every property and every reorder matches.
